Redrock Inks by StarGamerWorld Redrock Inks by StarGamerWorld
Alright, for the first pic of the year, this is a ink of :icongonru:'s Redrock character, who is a person that I had a little help in developing (but only a little =P).

Anyway, take a look, hope my inks have improved. No pencils to compare with yet, have to wait on :icongonru: to put them up. :)

nice! my next piece will be one i've inked, too. but i inked it on photoshop, not traditional style with technical pens or nibs...
did you do it traditional style?

Nope, mine is done digitally on GIMP, and it looks great as a result. :)

You have advice for inking hair and beards? I'm hopeless at it.

man, i think the biggest trick there is always to start from where the hair grows. your lines will be a little thicker there. it's important that they become thin, almost disappearing, when you get at the end of the hair.
i myself never got along well with nibs. i can only ink with technical pens, so i found it very gratifying to do it in photoshop, where i can erase my mistakes as much as i want. it will be next post, a dante... i just need to do the guns.

The linework is nice and clean. Like others have said, I personally would vary some of the line weights but to be honests a lot of artists let the colors do that for them these days. Me Im old fashioned and detail oriented so varying lines are a necessity.

Thanks! I'll be doing an ink of a well-known (I think) artist, so I can't wait to show everyone. ;)

Thanks! It means a lot to me that I'm improving! :D

As for the lack of space above... yeah that's what the pencils were like. :icongonru: will be coloring this I believe, so we'll see how he'll color it.

As for my next ink I'll be doing... I'll give you a hint:

Ah, okay. I try to pencil as I feel that there's things that inks just can't express sometimes. That and I actually want to draw my own stuff.

It's pretty good. You could vary the line weights a bit more, but it stands on its own just fine. Without the original pencils to compare it to, it's hard to judge, but on its own it looks fine to me.

Just remember that inking is more than tracing. You have to know how to refine the drawing with tapered lines, paying attention to the light source, etc.

Thanks. Glad to know that I'm improving. If the owner can get the pencils up, I'll be sure to let you know. =P

Well with an art class coming in February, I hope to be able to actually draw now! A tablet would also help if I had the money ^^;

For the part where you said "Just remember that inking is more than tracing. You have to know how to refine the drawing with tapered lines, paying attention to the light source, etc.", do you perhaps have an example I could look at that could help me understand what you mean please? :)

Well, I'm still learning myself, but I hunted down an online tutorial that explains the thought process better than I can: [link] It speaks of traditional ink, but as I may have mentioned before, the idea of inking is the same whether you're using pens, brushes or a digital art program. To be a great inker (which I'm certainly not--good maybe) means more than running pen paths over pencil drawings and stroking them with black. It means making the important things stand out with thicker, tapered lines (the main character or focal point) and devoting thinner lines to the less important elements (peripheral figures/characters, backgrounds, etc.).

Ah I had no idea you were still learning, I figured you were a master by this point, but they do say there's no such thing as perfect. :)

It's too late tonight for me to have a look at the link, but I'll be sure to take a look tomorrow. I'll keep practicing, but I hope you do the same as well, wouldn't want me to surpass you so suddenly

And I'm positive you're more than just "maybe good", don't go selling yourself so short. ;) I'm not too sure where to place myself as an inker, "Still in practice" is a good term, but I suppose I could call myself "Decent" or "Half-Decent".
